So I spoke to the client today and one of the partners is really wanting us to explore multiple images on the home page. Not a carousel in the traditional sense where images are timed and cycle through automatically. User clicks and images cycle through. I'd like the next build we show them to have this functionality so they can see & test it.
Here's and example of what the home page slide functionality should look like. It's not obvious, but click on big image and see it advance. The site loaded amazingly quick for how many images they've got piled in there.

Now we do need to make sure it's more obvious to user that you can actually advance slide and see more. Maybe cursor changes to custom right arrow when hovering over right side of image. Turns to left arrow when hovering over left side of image. (use arrow and circle found on project list)
Also, it seems they've figured out aspect ratio/responsiveness and are not cropping their images strangely. Can you check into that for out site as well?
For individual project pages, we might try something like this site's sliding header

This would allow us to use images of differing dimension so that responsive decisions aren't as difficult.
